Sylvia
de Swaan, Contact Sheet 84
tag # 000591
This is one of my favorite photographs. It is in a
catalogue of work by a central New York photographer
Sylvia de Swaan. The catalogue contains images that
she took upon her first return to Romania since 1945.
The images often include her hand and objects of memory,
they are as much about her as they are about where she
is visiting. I always loved the cover photograph because
it seems like such a child like activity of pretending
to fly a toy airplane while simultaneously reminding
us of the devastation of the war torn Europe of 1945.
Sylvia teaches photography at Hamilton College and
I had met her a few times before I started working at
Light Work. She
was at nearly every opening that we ever hosted. The
best support that Light Work gets is through regular
attendance to their events.
